Tesla – Invention through imagination
“…I soon discovered that my best comfort was attained if I simply went on in my vision farther and farther, getting new impressions all the time, and so I began to travel – of course, in my mind. ”
If you don’t know who Tesla was, Nikola Tesla was a great inventor now credited with many discoveries we probably wouldn’t want to live without today. From AC electricity to radio, magnetic induction lighting, and other inventions alleged to have been covered up by the powers that be. He fits the “mad scientist” stereotype quite well but even so he was successful even if not so much in his own lifetime. He was at the forefront of Science in his life and he not only invented but considered the implications of his inventions…
“If we were to release the energy of atoms or discover some other way of developing cheap and unlimited power at any point of the globe this accomplishment, instead of being a blessing, might bring disaster to mankind in giving rise to dissension and anarchy which would ultimately result in the enthronement of the hated regime of force. The greatest good will comes from technical improvements tending to unification and harmony”
Statements such as this cause you to wonder what inventions he may have made but did not want known due to the “potential disaster to mankind.” Besides his moral sensibility of not wanting to cause anarchy and disaster Tesla illustrates the benefit of the technique of Visualization. Early in his life he practiced visualization and refined his technique to a point where he could “build a device” in his imagination and “run” it to see if it could work. In his Autobiography he credits this technique with speeding his progress which is probably how he was able to accomplish so much.
So how can we build our awareness and improve our minds using the likes of Tesla as our role model? We can practice the art of creative visualization. You can pick up a book dedicated to the subject such as Shakti Gawain’s book on this subject or you can just start where you are able. Think of pleasant memories, favorite colors, close your eyes but look. You may only get impressions at first but after practice you may begin to be aware of images you can work with and then your creative journey has begun.
