In this modern age there is a pill for just about anything. It is no wonder that drugs and mind-altering substances are quite popular. Whether a person approaches substances from an attitude of reckless recreational use or from the viewpoint of a spiritual entheogen investigating (psi)scientist the dangers still exist.
Entheogens can be very useful for those who have lost faith in the miraculous. They awaken within us a taste for the mystical. They can fill us with wonder and awe as well as give us the desire to pursue further spiritual studies where previously the desire was too weak. These substances of which we speak are not legal in most locations.
People may argue that Entheogens should be legal and they have valid arguments. There are also those who argue that such mind-altering substances should stay illegal. There may be benefits to each attitude. There is however a good reason to proceed cautiously.
In most instances a person wishing for a spiritual or mind-altering experience simply takes a pill and before they know it they are soaring to previously unimagined heights. There are indications that these experiences can have positive effects if experienced safely. The problem however is that sometimes things do not go perfectly.
The phenomenon of permatripping or the trip trap is where instead of the effects of the “trip” wearing off, the effects linger. The mind latches on to these trip experiences and refuses to forget. The demonic looking image a person noticed while tripping stays with them. They are in essence “haunted” as their life continues even if they do not continue to use substances.
The importance of setting and company can go a long ways towards eliminating some of the negative effects of permatripping however the dangers are still very real. It is not my intention to tell people what they should or should not do. Please consider however that the reason many of these substances are illegal is because they do in fact possess real dangers to the sometimes fragile minds of those who seek them out. In many instances these people would have been better off had they taken up a regular meditation practice or other exercises such as yoga and chi kung in their effort to expand their awareness.
