Benefits of Meditation
What can Meditation do for you?
Meditation can be as simple or as complex as you make it. There are many books written on how to meditate and many different systems that offer a method, if you wish to learn meditation please view this site’s Learn Meditation Page. From my experience there are really two kinds of meditation, meditation with object and meditation without object.
Meditation with object would be a meditation where you focus on something in particular such as a candle flame, a mantra, or even the breath. This method of meditation may be considered more yogic and it can help you be more focused and able to concentrate. If you have ADD/ADHD and can manage to practice meditation, you may notice the symptoms disappear as I myself experienced.
Meditation without object is more a practice of cultivating awareness. You may simply observe the mind and all that bubbles up in consciousness without focusing on anything in particular.
Having tried many different methods of meditation over the years and have found breath meditation to be one of the simplest. This video does a nice presentation that is a great place to start for someone wanting to know how to meditate.
As for the benefits of meditation, I have noticed several. I am less tense or anxious and can relax better and can better handle stress. I feel and act more harmonious. I am able to focus and concentrate much better then I was ever able to before. My willpower has improved. I am in good health, and I am often serenely calm. There may be more benefits besides what I have experienced but those are what come to mind. I highly suggest reading this list of 100 benefits of meditation if you want to know more of what meditation can do for you.
